He has been legally blind since birth, and skis with his guide Nathan Chivers, who he has known since high school.[1][2] He began skiing in 1998 at a "tryout camp" for people with disabilities. He won two gold medals at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games in the Men's Downhill B1-3 event and the Men's Super-G B1-3 event, and a silver medal at the Men's Giant Slalom B1-2 event.[4] Due to these achievements, he carried the Australian flag during the closing ceremony of the Games.[5]
